About us

Our objective is to create revolutionary literacy improvement software that makes a significant contribution to English literacy levels, worldwide.

About Reading Doctor® Software

We are a small, dynamic company with an intense passion for creating tools to help people reach their potential. Our objective is to create revolutionary literacy improvement software that makes a significant contribution to English literacy levels, worldwide. We also want our software to be accessible for as many people as possible, regardless of economic or cultural circumstances.

Our fun, effective, scientifically-based teaching tools are designed for students who are learning to read (including students with literacy difficulties) and for students of English as a second language. Our software is designed by speech-language pathologist Dr. Bartek Rajkowski, PhD, whose extensive clinical experience and knowledge of research into reading acquisition are utilised in the teaching method and objectives of Reading Doctor® products.

Our fun, effective, scientifically-based teaching tools are designed for students who are learning to read (including students with literacy difficulties) and for students of English as a second language.

Reading Doctor® Software uses a unique, engaging and highly innovative teaching platform to strengthen skills found through research to be crucial in literacy development. The software employs a graded, self-adjusting, multisensory mnemonic system which automatically identifies student strengths and weaknesses, providing 'scaffolding' learning support for difficult or not yet developed skills while eliminating tasks in which the student already excels.

The potential for Reading Doctor® software to make a significant impact on student learning has been recognised by the Australian Government. After spending three years developing and testing a number of prototypes, in 2007 Reading Doctor® Pty Ltd (formerly LearningScience® Pty Ltd) received a prestigious Australian Government "Commercialising Emerging Technologies (COMET)" grant to assist in protecting the software's highly innovative teaching system through a patent, and bringing Reading Doctor® Software to market. The company has also received several Department of Trade and Economic Development grants from the Minister of Economic Development to assist with the production and marketing of Reading Doctor® Software.

The first Reading Doctor® Software title, Reading Sounds™ 1 Professional, was released in April 2008 to glowing reviews. Reading Sounds™ 1 Professional enables parents, teachers and clinicians to easily and effectively teach essential literacy skills such as letter-sound knowledge, phonemic awareness, blending, segmentation and sight word knowledge to beginning and struggling readers. The software is quickly being recognised as a major achievement in the field of literacy instruction and is being described by educators as a breakthrough in teaching children how to read. It is officially endorsed by a peak body advising South Australian schools on best practices in teaching literacy (SPELD SA). Reading Sounds™ 1 Pro was the subject of a Northern Territory Government project evaluating it as a key resource in strengthening literacy skills in indigenous children (it is now used widely throughout the NT). Following strong interest in Reading Doctor® Software and outstanding feedback from parents, teachers and clinicians all over Australia, in June 2008 LearningScience® Pty Ltd was recognised as one of the top ten most innovative Australian companies through the global Dell "Excellence in Small Business Awards".

Today, Reading Doctor® Software and apps are being used in thousands of Australian and international schools, homes and speech pathology clinics, with interest in our programs growing steadily. We are committed to our mission: to revolutionise literacy instruction and to make a significant contribution to the improvement of English literacy skills, worldwide!

We sincerely hope you find our software to be invaluable in helping your students or your own children to improve their literacy skills.

ABOUT Dr. Bartek Rajkowski

B App Sc (Sp Path), PhD.

Speech and Language Pathologist
Managing Director, Reading Doctor® Pty Ltd
Director, Adelaide Speech Pathology Services
Creator of Reading Doctor® Software

Bartek is the director of Adelaide Speech Pathology Services (www.adelaidespeech.com), a speech and language pathology clinic established in 2001. The speech-language pathologists at his clinic have extensive experience in the assessment, diagnosis and remediation of reading and writing difficulties and have a passion for helping students to improve their literacy skills. Bartek completed his doctoral research through the Flinders University of South Australia in 2012. His research was an investigation of the underlying cause of developmental reading difficulties.

Bartek's primary research interest is in the relationship between speech, language, auditory processing and literacy skills. His PhD research was an investigation of the phonological processing and reading skills of children with Dyslexia and children with Auditory Processing Disorder (APD). Research suggests phonological processing weaknesses in children with reading and writing difficulties may stem from inadequately specified phonological representations - the brain's neural representations of the sounds of language. Bartek has developed a model of phonological representations which may help to explain the range of skill deficits found in children with literacy difficulties. You can read an article summarising his research here.

Bartek is a passionate advocate for children with reading difficulties (click HERE for a fantastic recent documentary on the topic). As part of his advocacy work, Bartek sits on the governing council for Learning Difficulties Australia (LDA), an association of teachers and other professionals dedicated to assisting students with learning difficulties through effective teaching practices based on scientific research, both in the classroom and through individualised instruction (click HERE for more information). He is also a member of and an advisor to Dyslexia SA, a group of parents, community members, educators and health professionals concerned with the well-being and success of people with reading difficulties (see HERE for more information).

Bartek regularly presents training and development workshops on literacy development, literacy difficulties, evidence-based literacy instruction and Reading Doctor® Software around Australia.

With a passion for research driven, computer based approaches to literacy and language remediation, Bartek is determined to use his clinical experience and theoretical knowledge to develop more effective treatment methods for children with literacy difficulties, and to develop more effective teaching tools for children learning to read.

In 2003, following constant requests for recommendations from teachers and parents, and frustrated with the lack of quality research based software designed to improve literacy skills in children learning to read, Bartek began to develop Reading Doctor® Software - software designed to strengthen the skills known through research to be crucial in literacy acquisition.
