This is a list of recommended readers for helping beginning and struggling readers to learn to read. In choosing readers for your child to read by themselves, it is crucial that the level of decoding ability required to read the book is taken into consideration (in addition to vocabulary level). If students come across too many words they cannot decode, they will not be able to comprehend the text and will be discouraged from reading by themselves.
The Fitzroy Readers are Australian made, systematic phonics readers for children. There are 70 books in total. The books are ordered according to difficulty. The first books start with easy to decode words like 'cat' and 'mat', through to words like 'appreciative' and 'consciousness' in the final story.
The readers are also available as apps. Just search for 'Fitzroy Readers' in the app store.
